Physical therapy and home health – one experienced professional shares inside info and advice

November 05 2024

Adam Lipman has been a valued member of the LHC Group (LHCG) team since 2010. He began his career journey at LHCG as a physical therapist and has held roles that include program manager for Ortho and ALF Programs and regional therapy director. He currently serves as regional vice president of operations – home health. We asked Adam to respond to a few questions and share his perspective on his career journey as a home health physical therapist at LHCG.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career as a PT or OT in home health?

“As a therapist looking to start a career in home health, there are a few things to consider. One, home health is an autonomous job as a clinician. You spend the majority of your day traveling around – out on your own providing care to your patients.”

“Another aspect is the dynamic nature of home health scheduling. At times you may have the perfect daily schedule set up, with your patient visits lined up efficiently, but the nature of home health is that schedules will likely get changed. You must be able to adapt and pivot when things arise and be comfortable with the unplanned at times.”

“Finally, something I learned along the way is that as a therapist you must be comfortable wearing multiple hats. In home health, our goal is to always practice at the top of our licensure, and that may mean reviewing skills that you may have learned in school but have yet to practice in your professional career. Home health is a rewarding and meaningful career choice, with plenty of opportunity to grow as a clinician and as a professional.”

You’ve been a part of the team for more than 14 years. What is your favorite part about working at LHC Group?

“My favorite part of working at LHC Group has always been my patients and my colleagues. The patients I had the pleasure of meeting and helping have always left a huge impact on me. Being able to help keep people in their homes, aging in peace, is always the most rewarding part of the job. At the same time, my fellow clinicians and colleagues have always made the job fun.”

“As I have grown in my career, the relationships with my colleagues have proven to be invaluable when learning new skills. And having mentors to rely upon to help me succeed really has created a wonderful work environment here at LHC Group.”

With your extensive experience in the therapy field, what are some important pros and cons about working as a home health PT?

“When I look at the pros and cons of working as a therapist in home health, I truly believe the pros outweigh the cons. On the pros side I would put the patients, the autonomy, the flexibility, and the ability to not be stuck inside a clinic or hospital all day. It’s really the best setting I have found to work in and spending the past 14 years in home health was the best decision I have made professionally.”

“On the cons side, I would put the unpredictability of the setting. If you are a person who isn’t adaptable to change, this can be a very challenging job. If you are able to adapt, think critically on your feet, find efficiencies, and thrive in a fast-past, ever-changing environment, then this would be ideal for you.”
